Pride And Prejudice Movie (2005)

In this second part of my two-part movie recommendations of other TV and films starring our favorite P&P actors here (see previous related post here: Movie Recommendations: TV & Films starring P&P actors).

The TV and films here are starring or co-starring with P&P actors, but this time, they are on their own with other very well-known actors and no fellow P&P co-star with them. These movies too were great and these P&P actors were also a standout in this films whether they were playing lead or supporting roles. I highly recommend you see these films, if you haven't already done so. I've seen them all and they were all great movies. The Duchess - Keira Knightley
A chronicle of the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who was reviled for her extravagant political and personal life.

I must say, The Duchess is one of the few best films I've seen this year, of all the films I've seen in 2008 (thus far). This movie far exceeded my expectations. In fact, I didn't expect much from this film, but I know I wanted to see it, knowing Keira Knightley, one of my favorite actresses was starring and playing the lead title role would be amazing on this one (as she did in Atonement and P&P) and sure enough Keira didn't disappoint. Death at a Funeral - Matthew Macfadyen
Chaos ensues when a man tries to expose a dark secret regarding a recently deceased patriarch of a dysfunctional British family.

*Read my review: I must say this movie was one of the few funniest British films I've seen. I usually don't get the British sense of humor in their comedy films like Four Weddings And a Funeral or Love Actually. But I did on this one (and the Bridget Jones movies). This movie had me laughing from beginning to end. Great casting choice as the cast were terrific and right for this film. The script was brilliantly written, not too mention the humorous lines and scenes shown in this movie. I didn't even think I could laughed a lot in this movie, esp. the funeral/wake scenes... ***Read more of my FF mini review about this film here.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - Rupert Friend

Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

**My Commentary: Rupert Friend was worst than Wickham here in this film,

but he did such a good job playing that character. This movie was very good though, a must-see! The young boys as the leads were really good, cute, and adorable. You root for them both no matter how different their circumstances and situations were, but in the end they were just the same lil' boys who were, unfortunately, in the wrong time/era. RF only had a small role here, but he still did good. The movie was very sad though and the ending was shocking, thought-provoking, and just heartbreaking to watch that you wouldn't be able to stop thinking about this film after you finished watching it. Definitely a tearjerker film, but great movie nonetheless that will keep you glued and watching from beginning to the end.

My Boy Jack - Carey Mulligan
Author Rudyard Kipling and his wife search for their 17-year-old son after he goes missing during WWI.

**My Commentary: Another good war movie much like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This one was centered about the boy Jack played by Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliff, and his family including his

mother played by Sex & The City's Kim Catrall and his sister played by P&P's Carey Mulligan. Very interesting cast! Harry Potter, Kitty Bennet/P&P, and Samantha/S&TC in the same movie...who knew? lol. Great performances from all three actors as well as the actor who played the father. Carey was pretty good here. I think her performance here was a lot more stronger and better than in An Education as far showing and expressing her emotions...she got me teary-eyed in one scene with her brother Jack...that was a very good scene and performance-wise Carey had done there, in my opinion. I was very impressed. This movie was very sad and moving though much like Striped Pajamas...just heartbreaking and just makes you cry.

Surrogates - Rosamund Pike

Set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots, a cop (Willis) is forced to leave his home for the first time in years in order to investigate the murders of others’ surrogates.

Rosamund Pike (I must say, she's so underrated and one of my favorite actresses after seeing her in Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley and Wives and Daughters), played the beautiful Maggie Greer, the distant wife of Bruce Willis' character, agent Tom Greer. She was so beautiful and flawless in this film especially when she plays her surrogate robotic self (interesting though 'cause that's what Rosamund really looks like in real-life, except for the robotic acting, lol). Little Dorrit - Matthew Macfadyen
Amy "Little" Dorrit lives in the Marshalsea Prison for Debt caring for her father William Dorrit. To aid her family, Amy works for stern shut-in Mrs. Clennam. Son Arthur Clennam returns from China after his father's death, haunted by his father's final, mysterious words. Is there a long-buried family secret and does it somehow involve Amy and her family?

**My Commentary: Matthew as Arthur Clennam was adorable in this miniseries. I loved and enjoyed watching him in LD. He looked different here too than his Darcy character in P&P, but still handsome to look at, hehe. He did great here as he did in P&P movie. Definitely one of my favorite MM TV/Miniseries that he had done (The Pillars of the Earth is another one) and he was the one that made this more watchable for me as good as it was already.

Robin Hood - Matthew Macfadyen
The story of an archer in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion who fights against the Norman invaders and becomes the legendary hero known as Robin Hood.

I thought Robin Hood was great with plenty of action, humor, and adventure to keep you going and watching. Though I used to love the Kevin Costner Robin Hood version growing up, but this one is good too...a lil' different and more like a modern Gladiator, after all, Russell Crowe also starred on it and the same director, Ridley Scott directed this, so the comparison's natural. Besides, Gladiator was one of the best films and had won Russell Crowe and the film both Oscars. This film was good on its own...*Read more of my Film Review: Robin Hood

Inception - Talulah Riley
In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job till date, Inception.

Sherlock Holmes - Kelly Reilly
Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.

I thought Sherlock Holmes was pretty good. It had all the action, adventure, comedy, suspense, and mystery that I love and enjoy watching in a film. The story was good, interesting, witty, and funny...*Read more of my Film Review: Sherlock Holmes

A Good Year - Tom Hollander
A British investment broker inherits his uncle's chateau and vineyard in Provence, where he spent much of his childhood. He discovers a new laid-back lifestyle as he tries to renovate the estate to be sold.

**My Commentary: A Good Year was a very good movie. Very sweet, fun,

entertaining, romantic comedy. The story was smart and witty. The cast esp. Russell Crowe, Marion Cotillard, Albert Finney, Freddie Highmore, and Tom Hollander (aka P&P's Mr. Collins) were very good in this film. Tom Hollander was hilarious in his scenes. Stepmom - Jena Malone
A terminally-ill mother has to settle on the new woman in her ex-husband's life, who will be their new stepmother.

**My Commentary: Great movie! Young Jena Malone was great in this movie

with older vets in the likes of Susan Sarandon as her mom, Ed Harris as her dad, and Julia Roberts as her "stepmom." I love Jena in this movie and her line when she walked out on her mom and her dad said something like, "you don't walk out on your mother like that." And her reply, "No, that's your job" or something close to that...lol. This was a pretty sad movie, but very good. Great performances all around including young JM. Love the mother-daughter-son scenes esp. when they were singing, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

Ladies in Lavender - Judi Dench
Two sisters befriend a mysterious foreigner who washes up on the beach of their 1930's Cornish seaside village.

**My Commentary: Judi Dench and Maggie Smith were pretty good in this movie. They played sisters and were just great here. There was a good looking, younger man who they befriended in this movie...he was a mysterious foreigner that will keep all the ladies (young or old) interested in watching this movie, lol.

Plots with a View (aka Undertaking of Betty - US title) - Brenda Blethyn
A woman who's husband is cheating on her and an undertaker who's in love with her for ages, decide to fake her death so they can be together. However, the other town's undertaker who loves over-the-top funerals complicates things.

**My Commentary: This was a very funny movie and I LOL a lot when I saw this. Brenda Blethyn was hilarious. You definitely should check out and watch this just to see her as she was great here and much, much more likable here than in P&P, lol. Interesting too that Alfred Molina was in this movie. He co-starred with Keira Knightley in "Silk" and Carey Mulligan's father in "An Education."

Shakespeare in Love - Judi Dench
A young Shakespeare, out of ideas and short of cash, meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.

**My Commentary: I don't remember much of this movie as I only saw this once, but I thought this was pretty good. An interesting and noteworthy about this film was Judi Dench's small/cameo role as Queen Elizabeth, which won her an

Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Judi Dench is one of the best vet British/international actresses around...so, whether she plays a small role or a big role, she's still great at her every performances...so, it's no surprise she could play any role that she had played in her numerous films from her long acting career. Her Lady Catherine in P&P movie alone was top notch and no one compared to her brilliant performance (even though she had a small role, but that was still memorable...love to hate her bitchyness Lady C in P&P...you always remember her characters even if you don't want too esp. when she plays the bad/villain characters, lol).

Bend It Like Beckham - Keira Knightley
The daughter of orthodox Sikh rebels against her parents' traditionalism by running off to Germany with a football team (soccer in America)

**My Commentary: I think this was the very first movie I saw Keira Knightley

in. She was pretty young and had a small role in this lil' British/Bollywood independent film that was popular when David Beckham himself was still the talk of the football/soccer world back in early 2000s. I noticed this movie because of that too, but this was a pretty good movie and very funny too. It also introduced me to Bollywood movies (which I now love watching, hehe). Keira was pretty young and unknown here, but her character Juliet "Jules" Paxon was a scene stealer here and her scenes

with her mother (played by the wonderful British actress Juliet Stevenson) were hilarious esp. the scene when her mother thought that she was a lesbian, lol. Definitely check out this movie for those hilarious scenes and you'll learn about the Indian culture too as they live in London and still maintain their roots and culture. Plus the handsome Jonathan Rhys Meyers was in this film too and you'll understand why the girls were fighting over him...well, for one thing, he's easy on the eyes, lol.

The Italian Job - Donald Sutherland
Thieves plan to pull off the heist of their lives by creating Los Angeles' largest ever traffic jam.

**My Commentary: One of my favorite action/on the edge of your seat/fast paced films I've seen that you'll love and enjoy watching too as much as I did. Great cast too with Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, and Donald Sutherland. DS played Charlize Theron's character's dad here. Really good movie. I highly recommend you see this!

A Time to Kill - Donald Sutherland

A young lawyer defends a black man accused of murdering two men who raped his 10-year-old daughter, sparking a rebirth of the KKK.

**My Commentary: A really good courtroom/crime drama to watch esp. if you're a John Grisham novels' fan as this one was based/adapted from one of his popular novels of the same title. I didn't read the book, but saw this movie and thought it was pretty good. Great cast too with Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, Samuel L. Jackson, Donald Sutherland, and his equally famous son, Kiefer Sutherland (of 24 series). DS was pretty good here too. Definitely a must-see with the awesome cast alone!

The Edge of Love - Keira Knightley
Two feisty, free-spirited women are connected by the brilliant, charismatic poet who loves them both.

**My Commentary: I rented it and finally saw The Edge of Love earlier this afternoon. I thought it was good. Much better than her other movie, Silk, for sure.

Keira had more screen time and scenes in this one than she did in Atonement. Keira did a great job in this film as Vera Phillips and she sings in this one too. I must say, she has a nice singing voice. I was impressed that her singing voice was pleasant to hear too, good for that era in the movie... Read more here (scroll down to read reply #18)!

Domino - Keira Knightley
A recounting of Domino Harvey's life story. The daughter of actor Laurence Harvey turned away from her career as a Ford model to become a bounty hunter.

**My Commentary: It's hard to believe Keira Knightley filmed this movie in

between P&P movie, lol. She still did pretty good here as this was a complete opposite from P&P. She played the title role, portraying the true life story of late Domino Harvey, who was a Ford model turned bounty hunter. Keira kicked ass here with Lucy Lieu, Oscar winner Mo'Nique (Precious) who was hilarious in this movie, lol...and Mickey Rourke. Odd cast, but interesting one, even former 90210 actors Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering made cameos, lol. This was a good, fun action flick with Keira leading the cast (as she did with P&P).

Brothers - Carey Mulligan
A young man comforts his older brother's wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan.

**My Commentary: This was one of those films I didn't expect I would be so interested in watching and loved it too esp. for the great performances of the main

cast Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Jake Gyleenhaal. Even Carey's supporting/small role here was pretty good. Love Carey's American accent here. If you didn't know she's a Brit, you'd think she was American with that accent, lol. Like My Boy Jack and The Boy in the Stripe Pajamas, this one was sad too...but for a completely different reason...you'll have to watch the movie to see why. It was different than what I expected and no, the trailer didn't give away too much either.

Northanger Abbey - Carey Mulligan
When Catherine Morland is given the opportunity to stay with the childless Allen family in Bath, she is hoping for an adventure of the type she has been reading in novels. Soon introduced to society, she meets Isabella Thorpe and her brother John, a good friend of her own brother, James.

**My Commentary: This 2007 version was pretty good. Though it was my least

favorite amongst Jane Austen's six popular novel turned into screen adaptation. It was still good and Carey Mulligan was great here in her supporting role as Isabella Thorpe, completely opposite from her Kitty Bennet character/role in P&P. I must admit, I mostly watched this for her, but the movie itself was good and the cast as well as I liked the actress who played the lead role of Catherine Morland. She did good here alongside Carey Mulligan.

Saved! - Jena Malone
When a girl attending a Christian high school becomes pregnant, she finds herself ostracized and demonized, as all of her former friends turn on her.

**My Commentary: OMG! This movie was hilarious! LOL! I laughed a lot watching (and re-watching) this movie. Jena Malone played the lead character

Mary here in her first major lead role as well as the narrator. She was pretty good in this movie. So funny too alongside Mandy Moore who was a scene stealer, lol.

One of the best, smart, funniest teen flick I've seen. I think this was a lot better than Mean Girls especially with teens like Mary dealing with peer pressure and being an outsider... in a Christian school with a best friend like Hilary Faye, the "mean Christian girl," lol. The music was pretty good, great casting especially with Jena Malone as Mary, Mary-Louise Parker as Mary's mother Lillian (wow, they do look alike here as mother and daughter...great casting! *Read more of my FF mini review of this film here.

Life as a House - Jena Malone
When a man is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he takes custody of his misanthropic teenage son, for whom quality time means getting high, engaging in small-time prostitution, and avoiding his father.

**My Commentary: This was a good movie. Not probably your typical movie to watch on a day where you don't want to watch any movie that makes you sad or depressed, lol. This was still good, nonetheless. The cast including Hayden Christensen and Jena Malone and their performances were pretty good and what got me to watching this movie. Jena had a small supporting role here and as usual, she was pretty good. She's definitely one of those very rare, talented young actresses, who can really act. She's versatile too with playing her many different characters/roles she had played in her many films since she was a lil' girl when I first saw her in "Bastard Out of Carolina."

Love in a Cold Climate - Rosamund Pike
Spanning the critical historical time from 1929 to 1940, three young women search for love in this high-spirited adaptation of Nancy Mitford's novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate.

For the earnest narrator, Fanny, a diffident teenager living with her crackpot Uncle Matthew Radlett (Alan Bates, The Mayor of Casterbridge and Hard Times) and

distracted Aunt Sadie (Celia Imrie, Gormenghast), it's a simple matter of marrying a decent man.

**My Commentary: I love Rosamund Pike in this miniseries. She was great in this one. I didn't know she was in this one before P&P and just recently noticed this lil' gem of miniseries when I was browsing her IMDB filmography and noticed the title that piqued my interest...I checked out the forum, PBS' website for it, plus the youtube link above, which only lead me to be even more interested in this miniseries as it didn't give away too much...so I had to get the DVD from Amazon. I must, say I was glad I

bought the DVD, this was a pretty good miniseries and Rosamund appeared more as she played one of the main lead characters' Fanny Logan, not too mention, her character was the narrator and has more screen time that I loved, enjoyed watching from beginning to end. My only disappointment (though not too much) from this miniseries was that not enough story from her character was shown and told here (and she was supposed to be the narrator and should get more in her point of view) esp. her true love story (compare to the other tragic characters in the story) with her character Fanny and Alfred (they were such a cute and adorable couple), as it was not explore more in this miniseries. I would've love to see more of her happy marriage life with Alfred (he's easy on the eyes too...very handsome! You'll love his introduction in this one). So, yeah, RP/P&P fans, if you love Rosamund's Jane Bennet in P&P movie, you'll love her in this one too. I highly recommend you see this as her character is kinda similar from P&P, but at the same time different that she actually go for what she wants in love and doesn't wait around like her JB character in P&P movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean - Keira Knightley
Blacksmith Will Turner teams up with eccentric pirate "Captain" Jack Sparrow to save his love, the governor's daughter, from Jack's former pirate allies, who are now undead.

**My Commentary: In my opinion, this first POTC film was the best of the three Pirates movies I've seen and my favorite too. I also only own this movie in my DVD collection of favorite films on DVD. Recently, Syfy just aired this and I ended up watching this movie (again) even with commercials, I watched this movie from beginning to end, lol...yep, I did. Like I said, I loved this movie and I haven't seen it in a while, so I watched it again, hehe. Keira Knightley was pretty young here and her role here was a lot better than the sequels. I didn't care much about her in the Pirates movies though until she did P&P...as that's where she finally got a lead role where she was able to showcase her acting ability and made me a KK fan. I now appreciate and enjoy watching more of her old movies after she did P&P, lol.

The Greatest - Carey Mulligan
A drama that is centered around a troubled teenage girl and a family that is trying to get over the loss of their son.

**My Commentary: Carey Mulligan co-starred with vets Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan in this family drama. She was pretty good in this lil' independent movie, which Pierce Brosnan produced from his new production company. Carey had an American accent in this movie again (as she did on Brothers with Natalie Portman and I believe she'll do another one in her new film with boyfriend Shia Lebeuf, and Michael Douglas in Wall Street 2). Very good, touching, and moving film. A tearjerker family drama too. The performances here were the best thing about this movie especially Susan Sarandon (she always makes me cry, lol), Pierce Brosnan, and Carey, whose performance was quite impressive and adorable in this movie and her American accent was spot on.

Lark Rise to Candleford - Claudie Blakley
An adaptation of Flora Thompson's autobiographical novel "Lark Rise To Candleford", set in 19 century Oxfordshire, in which a young girl moves to the local market town to begin an apprenticeship as a postmistress.

**My Commentary: What's very interesting and unexpected was that this series stars our very own P&P 05's Claudie Blakley (Charlotte Lucas), who plays Emma Timmins and P&P '95's Julia Sawalha (Lydia Bennet), who

plays Dorcas Lane (interestingly, she's so much better in this role than she was in P&P 95's Lydia Bennet...at least for me. I like her in this role a lot) for three seasons! Get this, their characters are cousins too! Not too mention, Claudie Blakley (she's very good here....lovin' her character) plays a wife and mother with about 5-6 children! Her eldest daughter Laura Timmins, the lead character and narrator is played by Olivia Hallinan. Also, familiar actors I've seen in North & South, Mansfield Park, and Emma were in this series too. Great casting!!! **Read more here!

Eden Lake - Kelly Reilly

Refusing to let anything spoil their romantic weekend break, a young couple confront a gang of loutish youths with terrifyingly brutal consequences.

**My Commentary: A very good suspense thriller film that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time you're watching this. Kelly Reilly was great here and likable too (so unlike her Caroline Bingley role in P&P, lol) and you'll root for her character here as well. She plays the female lead, co-starring with Michael Fasbender (who will be co-starring with Kelly's P&P co-star Keira Knightley in the upcoming, "A Dangerous Method," which they're still filming at this time...). Great acting performances by the leads and supporting actors in this lil' movie, I wouldn't have known or watched if it weren't for Kelly Reilly (who's becoming one of my favorite actresses). They really had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and kept wondering what's gonna happen next...the whole time I was watching this movie. I was disappointed though with the ending...not what I expected, but it was what it was, lol. I guess I expected more esp. a film like this that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, only for it to end unsatisfactory. Perhaps there's an alternate ending on the the DVD somewhere (I didn't get to see? lol) or it's probably just me as I wanted to see some kind of justice for KR's character that I had been rooting for throughout the film and she couldn't even do anything at the end...she was helpless after all she had tried to do... :( *sigh* Still, a pretty good movie though and not all movies have happy endings...

Love Actually - Keira Knightley
Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely and interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.

**My Commentary: I thought this was a pretty good, light-hearted,
romantic-comedy British film. Keira Knightley's small part in the movie

was one of the few stories/scenes I love this movie esp. when the guy who was her new husband's best friend had a secret crush on her and told her, "To me, you are perfect." Aww, how romantic...too bad he's cute and too late too...plus, she was already taken, lol. Another was Hugh Grant's character and the other was Liam Neeson's character with the boy who plays the drums with the young girl who sang Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" song. Interesting and attractive large cast too. The all-star/ensemble cast of Love Actually consisted of who's who amongst the popular British actors we

mostly are used to seeing in many popular British and Hollywood films and they include P&P/Jane Austen actors such as our very own Keira Knightley (P&P 05), Colin Firth (P&P 95), Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant. The 3 actors in Jane Austen related films like Sense & Sensiblity were stars Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman, while in Pride & Prejudice 2005 film and BBC miniseries 1995, Keira Knightley and Colin Firth. So in Love Actually we got P&P '95's Mr. Darcy, P&P '05's Elizabeth Bennet, and S&S' Elinor Dashwood, Edward Ferrar, and Col. Brandon ... Btw, speaking of Love Actually, scroll back up ^ a bit and see the LA cast photo and notice that all 5 of them from Jane Austen Movies were all sitting/posing in the right side. How cool eh?
