Charlotte Brontë's Victorian romance is no stranger to the silver screen, but Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga's affecting and beautifully mounted adaptation is among the best. Sometimes, casting can make all the difference. In this case, Australia's Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) plays the determined Jane Eyre opposite Ireland's Michael Fassbender (Fish Tank) as the world-weary Edward Rochester (neither actor betrays their country of origin). Fukunaga begins with Jane's escape from Rochester's High Gothic Thornfield Hall before flashing back to the days when the plainspoken orphan lived with her cruel and resentful aunt (an unsympathetic Sally Hawkins). The aunt ships her off to a loveless charity school, where she still manages to receive a fine education, after which she lands a position as governess for Rochester's ward, Adèle. Though his housekeeper (Dame Judi Dench, excellent) makes Jane feel welcome, the brooding Rochester attempts to mock and demean her, but the quick-witted 19-year-old can hold her own. What might offend a more superficial man intrigues her employer (played by a gent more handsome than the author intended). Sparks fly, but he expresses greater interest in a local beauty. Just as Jane finally pierces Rochester's armor, she discovers his terrible secret, and hits the road. She meets a kindly missionary (Jamie Bell) and his sweet sisters, who offer her the family she never had, before a sequence of well-plotted developments allow Jane to forge her own future. For once, no one can stop her, making for a swoon-worthy, if bittersweet conclusion. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Who would think a movie about an autoworkers strike could be so entertaining and even moving? Made in Dagenham is simply brilliant. Rita O'Grady (Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky) finds herself unexpectedly thrust into the limelight when she becomes the leader of a strike by the women who sew the upholstery for a Ford factory in Dagenham, England--a strike that, thanks largely to the efforts of management and unions alike to dismiss it, turns into a struggle over equal pay for women. But because of a smart and subtle screenplay, understated direction, and above all outstanding performances by the entire cast--also featuring Rosamund Pike (An Education), Miranda Richardson (The Crying Game), and Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit)--Made in Dagenham never stops being about people, even as its political scope widens. Every step is grounded in human relationships, among the striking women, between Rita and her husband, between the wife of a factory manager and a floor worker. The movie skillfully balances issues of class and gender equality and makes you care deeply about them--and about these people struggling for basic fairness. And it's funny, sad, and genuinely stirring. Simply a marvelous movie, not to be missed. --Bret Fetzer

Based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, the romantic drama stars Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) in the lead roles. In the story, Jane Eyre flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester. And a first look (and a nice cast biography) of ...

Tamzin Merchant as Mary Rivers

Tamzin Merchant
| Mary Rivers

As a teenager, Tamzin Merchant realized a dream; her great admiration for author Jane Austen spurred her to phone the casting director of the pending movie version of Pride and Prejudice to ask to audition for a part in the film. After meetings, she was indeed offered a role – Georgiana Darcy – even though she had no previous acting experience. The then-novice threw herself into the work, even learning to play the piano selections that her character would be playing on-screen in the Focus Features release directed by Joe Wright. She played the part, acting opposite Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, and Judi Dench of Jane Eyre.

Since that debut performance, she has continued to cultivate an acting career while also completing her university studies. She has made more films, including Andrew Silver’s A Touch of Love (a.k.a. Radio Cape Cod); and Marc Forby’s Princess Ka’iulani (a.k.a. Barbarian Princess), opposite Q’orianka Kilcher.

Ms. Merchant is best known for her portrayal of Henry VIII’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard, in the hit series The Tudors. Her telefilm credits include Sheree Folkson’s My Family & Other Animals, with Imelda Staunton; Bryn Higgins’ Casualty 1906; and Syd Macartney’s [The] Good Housekeeping [Guide], with Alan Davies. Rosamund Pike, Carey Mulligan, and Colin Firth made the BAFTA longlist

Posted by Le on Saturday, January 8, 2011

The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) just announced their LONGLIST of possible nominees for the 2011 BAFTA and the shortlist and final nominations will be announced on January 18th.

BAFTA will take place on Sunday 13 February 2011.

Our P&P actors: Rosamund Pike, Carey Mulligan, and Colin Firth made the BAFTA Longlist along with their films such as RP's Barney's Version and Made In Dagenham, CM's Never Let Me Go, and CF's The King's Speech. As usual, BAFTA snubbed Keira Knightley once again for her wonderful role in Never Let Me Go, like they snubbed her previously in Pirates/P&P/The Duchess films...and yet Gemma Arterton (no pun intended) made the BAFTA longlist for her two films less popular or well-known than her Prince of Persia (which I loved and enjoyed) and Keira's NLMG films combine. Not too mention, her  NLMG co-stars Carey and Andrew Garfield made the longlist each, but no Keira (not even in her best Oscar/Golden Globe nominated role in P&P gets her any nomination or recognition in her own country's big award show)...Interesting BAFTA! What's up with the frequent snub on KK? They must not like her...but even in her best performances (Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice and Georgiana in The Duchess) she still get snubbed...how odd! Her acting has been solid and great since P&P movie...

An interesting old Joe Wright interview relating to BAFTA snub of KK during P&P era...
Wright caused a stir last year by berating Bafta’s British voters, who denied Knightley a best-actress nomination for playing Elizabeth Bennet. As voters for the Oscars and Golden Globes saw fit to nominate her, the snub seemed doubly harsh, and may have owed something to her celebrity and prominence in gossip magazines. But, after Atonement, it’s unlikely she will need Wright to spring to her defence again.

“It isn’t her fault,” Wright protests. “I know some actors court the media, and Keira doesn’t. She’s incredibly beautiful, so she gets to be the face of Chanel, and that’s great for a few bob, so good luck to her. But when she’s making a film, that’s all she cares about.”
- Joe Wright interview with David Gritten of The Telegraph (August 2007).

Anyway, here are the BAFTA longlist featuring Rosamund Pike, Carey Mulligan, Colin Firth, Sally Hawkins, Gemma Arterton and their films and co-stars...Best of luck to them all (though I'm sure CF and The King's Speech will obviously get lots of nominations for sure)!

In Theaters Today: Made In Dagenham

Posted by Le on Friday, November 19, 2010

Now showing in select theaters today (New York and Los Angeles), Made In Dagenham starring , Miranda Richardson, and Bob Hoskins, and Rosamund Pike. It'll expand in more U.S. theaters nationwide starting November 24th and December 17th. Find theater listing here!

Here's the synopsis...
Based on a true story, Made in Dagenham portrays a decisive moment in that decade of upheaval, when the fight for equal rights and pay was led – unexpectedly – by ordinary working-class women with one foot in the kitchen, one foot on the factory floor, and ears glued to the pop coming over the radio and telly from far-off London (19 kilometers and a world away). It‟s a vintage “girl power” tale.
Rosamund Pike, Sally Hawkins, and co-stars and the film itself, Made In Dagenham had been getting rave reviews!

Check out and Read The Film Stage's (who gave it an A!)
Rosamund Pike plays Lisa, an educated housewife who is tired of being thought a fool by her husband. While her role in the piece is small, Pike makes the best of every frame, adding to her already glowing reputation as a tender and talented actress.

Synopsis
Based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, the romantic drama stars Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) in the lead roles. The isolated and imposing residence – and Mr. Rochester’s coldness – have sorely tested the young woman’s resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. As Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will return to Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret that he is hiding…
