Charlotte Brontë's Victorian romance is no stranger to the silver screen, but Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga's affecting and beautifully mounted adaptation is among the best. Sometimes, casting can make all the difference. In this case, Australia's Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) plays the determined Jane Eyre opposite Ireland's Michael Fassbender (Fish Tank) as the world-weary Edward Rochester (neither actor betrays their country of origin). Fukunaga begins with Jane's escape from Rochester's High Gothic Thornfield Hall before flashing back to the days when the plainspoken orphan lived with her cruel and resentful aunt (an unsympathetic Sally Hawkins). The aunt ships her off to a loveless charity school, where she still manages to receive a fine education, after which she lands a position as governess for Rochester's ward, Adèle. Though his housekeeper (Dame Judi Dench, excellent) makes Jane feel welcome, the brooding Rochester attempts to mock and demean her, but the quick-witted 19-year-old can hold her own. What might offend a more superficial man intrigues her employer (played by a gent more handsome than the author intended). Sparks fly, but he expresses greater interest in a local beauty. Just as Jane finally pierces Rochester's armor, she discovers his terrible secret, and hits the road. She meets a kindly missionary (Jamie Bell) and his sweet sisters, who offer her the family she never had, before a sequence of well-plotted developments allow Jane to forge her own future. For once, no one can stop her, making for a swoon-worthy, if bittersweet conclusion. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

So, looking forward to seeing her in something different on this one!

Red Faction: Origins (via Syfy):
In the year 2125, Alec Mason led the Martian Colonies to freedom in the hit action game Red Faction: Guerrilla. Now, Syfy and THQ are teaming up to continue the saga of conflict on Mars 25 years later in an all-new Original Movie, Red Faction: Origins. Stargate Universe's Brian J. Smith stars as Jake Mason, son of revolutionary hero Alec Mason (Terminator 2's Robert Patrick) and a Red Faction ranger. Fighting to preserve Martian freedom, Jake encounters a powerful new enemy in a dangerous and mysterious group led by the charismatic Adam Hale (Torchwood's Gareth David-Lloyd) and holding secrets that will rock the Mason clan. Jake must now battle the relentless regime and somehow reunite a family torn apart by war.

Red Faction: Origins also stars Battlestar Galactica's Kate Vernon and The Tudors' Tamzin Merchant, and will feature music from Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica).

Based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, the romantic drama stars Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) in the lead roles. In the story, Jane Eyre flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester. And a first look (and a nice cast biography) of ...

Tamzin Merchant as Mary Rivers

Tamzin Merchant
| Mary Rivers

As a teenager, Tamzin Merchant realized a dream; her great admiration for author Jane Austen spurred her to phone the casting director of the pending movie version of Pride and Prejudice to ask to audition for a part in the film. After meetings, she was indeed offered a role – Georgiana Darcy – even though she had no previous acting experience. The then-novice threw herself into the work, even learning to play the piano selections that her character would be playing on-screen in the Focus Features release directed by Joe Wright. She played the part, acting opposite Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, and Judi Dench of Jane Eyre.

Since that debut performance, she has continued to cultivate an acting career while also completing her university studies. She has made more films, including Andrew Silver’s A Touch of Love (a.k.a. Radio Cape Cod); and Marc Forby’s Princess Ka’iulani (a.k.a. Barbarian Princess), opposite Q’orianka Kilcher.

Ms. Merchant is best known for her portrayal of Henry VIII’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard, in the hit series The Tudors. Her telefilm credits include Sheree Folkson’s My Family & Other Animals, with Imelda Staunton; Bryn Higgins’ Casualty 1906; and Syd Macartney’s [The] Good Housekeeping [Guide], with Alan Davies.
